Leon was standing along Cass Ave when I approached him. He’s originally from New Jersey, but has been a Detroiter over 20 years. Mostly on the street. The immediate thing I noticed is most of his fingers are gone, just stubs really. “I had some bad frostbite.” His strategy is to sleep in the afternoon across the street in an alley, then stay moving all night to keep warm. He sees himself as a creative person and says at one time he earned his GED. His rambling, disjointed speech pattern alerts one to some underlying mental illness. He fends for himself, but needs to be in a custodial environment. He’s been “mainstreamed”.
